In spring 2010 I saw Beneath the Dancing Sky which included Minus 7 by Ohad Naharin. At the time I thought it was entertaining, but nothing more. As part of Deca Dance Helsinki, which consists of fragments of Naharin's works, it made much more sense.

However, 'to make sense' isn't necessarily the best expression in this context. His work seems to be very much just movement. One could see certain ideas behind the fragments, but basically what was interesting was the movement, both of individuals and of groups, and one could also start appreciating his humour. But if one wants emotional depth, it won't be found here.

Naharin's style is so very un-Finnish that working with him must be very instructive to the dancers of the National Ballet.

So, contrary to my expectations, the performance yesterday was both enjoyable and enlightening.
