Yesterday was time for a new Salome, well obviously just a new interpretation by Christof Loy, but still far from the religious-erotic exoticism of the belle époque. Most of the characters wore dark men's suits most of the time. I wonder what was the purpose of that, apart from the graphical black-and-whiteness of the scene? It was impressive at the start, but soon became annoying as it was hard to tell the characters apart. Salome was recognizable by her long blond hair, but who was that man lying much of the time on the ground with blood on his shirt? Later it turned out that it was Narraboth, whom Salome had persuaded to bring Jochanaan to her. And who is that man pulling his trousers off to follow Salome? It must be Herod. Herodias was easy to recognize: she wore a dress. Otherwise the characters were largely interchangeable. Well, the debating Jews  wore kippahs... And of course, Jochanaan was completely naked when he was brought to Salome, who by the way neither danced nor undressed.

The performance was streamed live, and will be shown later also on YLE Teema and Arte TV channels.
