The choreographer of this new full-length ballet, Alice in Wonderland, Jorma Elo, claims that the story is made for ballet, but some reviewers have said that the verbal wit of Lewis Carroll's book is so essential to it that much is lost without it, and I can't help agreeing. For instance my favourite in the book, the Cheshire Cat, is reduced to a grinning cat's face appearing and disappearing, going up and going down, and the story is probably pretty incomprehensible if you don't know it in advance, as even I who have read the book and seen a couple of films - without being an Alice fan - was slightly baffled at times.

However, it was pleasant to watch. The old-style sets and costumes were nice, as was the simple and lively choreography. Eun-ji Ha was a pretty Alice, but the White Rabbit (Xiaoyu He) was delightful. The music was a hotchpotch of classics that melted into the whole seamlessly.

"The ballet is recommended for children over the age of 6." Why, certainly! And next Alice Through the Looking Glass. I look forward to seeing the frumious Bandersnatch...
